I’ve been toting around a new buddy that’s literally been hanging out close to my heart for 2 weeks now.
The Fitbit zip is an uber portable activity tracker that collects your fitness data seemingly by magic and sends it to your dashboard wirelessly and automatically. It uses a compact accelerometer to track steps taken, calories, and total distance. You can set daily, weekly, and monthly goals while challenging yourself and even your friends on their online portal.
Best Buy sent me the black version which blended really well into my business attire at work. But I think it would have been fun to wear one of the many other colors they come in like Lime, Pink, or Blue. I personally don’t mind standing out when it comes to fitness clothing or gear because I find that it usually starts interesting conversations with new people. It’s amazing how many times I’ve made a new friend or learned something new simply because dialogue was sparked by what Lisa calls “in your face” bright shoes, gear, or work out clothing.
Don’t be afraid to stand out
After wearing this little tracker I’ve discovered a few things I love that I think you’ll love :
It smiles at you…
He also sticks his tongue out when you’re not active and sometimes shows you a really wide grin when you make fitbit happy by achieving a goal like 5,000 steps a day. Gotta love the motivation that comes from getting someone’s approval…even if it is a little smart bot
Think of him as your virtual coach that’s there with you every step of the way.
It’s feather light and about the size of a quarter so there were many days when I simply forgot I was wearing it. That’s good AND bad. I had a total freak out one day when I thought I had thrown it into the wash. You should’ve seen me go into full blown panic racing around the house trying to find the black pair of pants I thought they were attached to. Luckily, I was wrong and discovered that my fitbit was actually on a black dress that was still in the other hamper. Phew.
There’s an app for that. Instead of having to log into a computer to see my detailed stats, I was able to check the fitbit app on my smartphone instantly. It was so convenient to log in throughout the day without typing in my username and password each time since the app remembered me.
Look ma no cords! You don’t need a usb port or any other cables to sync your data to the online dashboard. Everything transmits wirelessly and automatically so you don’t have to worry about losing cables or remembering to link up.
Fit Peeps!! they did a really great job of creating a community where you can get support and join challenges that keep you motivated. There are thousands of groups (4,982 to be exact) you can become a member of. You can find fitbit users in your city, that share your occupation (I saw there was a group for just flight attendants), or with similar goals.
It’s Affordable The fitbit zip is only $59.99 at Bestbuy or $99.99 for a pack of two if you want to gift one to a friend and save 20 dollars. Plus, I have a special 20% discount for you to use below that’ll bring the price down to $48
Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed using this as a daily reminder to stay active. Working a desk job 40+ hours a week makes it really freaking hard to move around much. With this hooked on my clothing though, I found myself trying to walk around the building more and even paced around instead of standing still while scanning records or faxing documents. Yes I looked a little crazy but anything in the name of fitness right?!
Thanks to BestBuy, you can now get 20% off of any fitness gear (Fitbit, Withings scale, Garmin, Nike running watch, etc.) they sell or small appliances (like juicers, blenders, Keurigs, etc.) using the coupons below. These are good until February 13:

That’s what I love the most about it! Now I get up and walk a lot more than I did without the tracker because I want my numbers to improve.
I’m so intrigued by counting numbers that I think I’d really like this thing. It would be a fun way to track post baby activity.
